Special feature in the Sächsische Zeitung newspaper: The future of construction

Scientists and students at TU Dresden are consistently working on bringing about fundamental changes in the construction industry and making them quickly usable in practice. The current special feature of the Sächsische Zeitung presents four TUD projects on the following topics:
  1. Many tiles make up the mosaic
  2. Living in a 3D printed home
  3. Lightweight concrete against falling rocks
  4. The sustainable transformation of the construction industry

Funding for the "LAB - Living Art of Building" research centre in place

The "LAB - Living Art of Building" research centre initiated by Prof Manfred Curbach can now be launched from Bautzen and expanded to various locations throughout Germany. The federal government, districts and local authorities have pledged funding for the centre.

World Soil Day: “2024 Soil of the Year” comes from Tharandt Forest

World Soil Day on 5 December is an important occasion to focus on the diversity and impact of soil as a natural resource. This time, the "forest soil" receives this award. Representing the diversity of forest soils, the nationwide jury selected a typical soil from the Tharandt Forest near Dresden as "Soil of the Year 2024".

Torsten Heyer and Rico Wittwer receive the 2023 Teaching Award of the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences

The teaching prize is awarded annually in two categories. Dr Torsten Heyer, a civil engineer, received the prize in the "Basic Teaching" category for his lecture on "Water Transport Systems" and Dr Rico Wittwer received the prize in the "Advanced Teaching" category for his lecture on "Data Collection and Analysis in Transport Planning".

Business Education and Management Training, esp. Digitalization in Education and Work Environments

Dr Jacqueline Schmidt holds the newly created junior professorship since 1 January 2024. In her research, she mainly deals with questions of digital transformation in vocational education processes.

Ludivine Gragy

Visiting Professor at the Institute of Landscape Architecture

As part of the Eleonore Trefftz program, the French landscape architect Ludivine Gragy will expand and complement research and teaching at the Institute of Landscape Architecture in the summer semester 2024 and winter semester 2024/25. She is an impressive designer and researches the meaning and logic of endangered cultural landscapes.

PD promotes resource-efficient building construction with an endowed professorship

With the endowed professorship at the Technische Universität Dresden, PD would like to intensify the transfer and development of knowledge on climate-friendly public construction and support the training of qualified young professionals interested in this field. The endowed professorship has been established for a period of six years, is based at the Institute of Concrete Structures and has been held by Prof. Yvonne Ciupack since 1 January 2024.

IKOS Consulting Deutschland GmbH finances two-year company scholarship at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences

The official meeting between the company and the scholarship holder took place at the faculty on 28 February 2024. In the presence of Dean Prof Regine Gerike, the scholarship recipient, Juan Diego Vega Idárraga, and Ulrich Grüner, Director Business Development at IKOS, met for the first time and got talking.

The global company, which specialises in railway and energy technology, is funding a two-year company scholarship of 750 euros per month.

ABSOLUT II - kick-off for follow-up research project on automated driving

"Individual public transport for the outskirts of Leipzig through the use of autonomous on-demand shuttles" is what the ABSOLUT research and development project stands for.
The Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action (BMWK) is now funding the continuation of the project as ABSOLUT II. TU Dresden serves as the central research center for the project. Three chairs of the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences are involved in ABSOLUT II.

New potential applications for the socio-cultural center on the Telux site in Weißwasser are to be developed with the expertise of a research team from WISSENSARCHITEKTUR/TU Dresden.

InnoCulture Telux wins "simul+Kreativ" sponsorship award totalling 145,000 Euro

The socio-cultural center TELUX in Weißwasser is being reorganised with the help of researchers from TU Dresden. "InnoCulture Telux" - a cooperation project between WISSENSARCHITEKTUR - Laboratory of Knowledge Architecture and the City of Weißwasser - was awarded a sponsorship prize in the "simul+Kreativ" competition in the area of "Contribution to the revitalisation of social interaction and creative approach to new regional forms of living and working, taking digitalisation, creative industries and culture into account".

Economic expert Prof. Veronika Grimm presented the annual report of the German Council of Economic Experts "Overcoming Weak Growth - Investing in the Future" (2023/24) and then discussed current and pressing issues on topics such as economic, energy and migration policy.

Johannes and Dierck Evert are the alumni of January 2024.

Alumni of the month January 2024

Landscape architecture has been a leitmotif that runs through several generations of the Evert family. Dierk Evert - "Landi" alumnus of 1972 - was influenced by his parents, and his son Johannes followed in the same footsteps when he graduated in 2013.

Daniela Bohn is Alumna of the Month February 2024.

Alumna of the month February 2024

Daniela Bohn completed her Master's degree in International Management at IHI Zittau in 2021. Thanks to her elective modules in project, CSR and environmental management, she acquired the technical and methodological background knowledge and skills that she needs today as a commercial project manager at Deutsche Bahn.

Müslüm Kaplan is the Alumnus of the Month March 2024.

Alumnus of the month March 2024

Müslüm Kaplan came to Dresden as an Erasmus student from Turkey. He learnt a lot from the German work and research culture. His advice to students is not to limit themselves to just one subject area and to make efficient use of the university's educational and research infrastructure.

Call "Season of Excellence - Dresden Summer Schools 2024"

The initiative "Season of Excellence - Dresden Summer Schools" starts 2024 with a call for submission of your school key data for the central presentation of all (summer) schools taking place in Dresden.

Registrations until 31 March 2024 at dresden-summer-schools@tu-dresden.de.

Prerequisite: The school will take place in Dresden in 2024 with the TUD and/or another/other partner institution of the DRESDEN-Concept as organiser and is preferably open to international participants from Germany and abroad.

TUD geoscientists conduct research in the icy south

Five researchers from TU Dresden are on board the German polar research vessel "Polarstern", which set sail from Hobart, Australia, on 6 February 2024 for research cruise PS141.

Together with international colleagues, they will carry out measurements that will help to reconstruct the development of the climate and the ice sheet in East Antarctica.

Research cruises with the "Polarstern" - weekly reports from 2022

The research icebreaker Polarstern is travelling for the third time. On its third expedition, the team is carrying out measurements on global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) to record the movement of the Earth's crust, among other things. During the excursion in 2022, the depth of supraglacial lakes, among other things, was determined using a remote-controlled measuring boat equipped with appropriate sensors.

Opening ceremony on 12 January 2024 of the 47th UNEP/UNESCO/BMUV International Postgraduate Course on Environmental Management for Developing Countries.

Kick-off: 47th UNEP/UNESCO/BMUV International Postgraduate Course: Empowering Environmental Leaders for a Sustainable Future

The 21 expert participants of the 47th UNEP/UNESCO/BMUV International Postgraduate Course on Environmental Management for Developing Countries have joined CIPSEM to begin a six-month adventure of learning about critical sustainability and environmental management issues.

During the festive opening ceremony, CTIO Prof. Tetzlaff and CIPSEM’s Scientific Director Prof. Uta Berger encouraged participants to make the most of their time at TUD and to forge connections for continuing collaboration in this Decade of Action to deliver the Global Goals.

Isabel Bunce, a representative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), stated how well the course fits with current key issues being addressed by the BMUV at the national and international level and also expressed the desire of BMUV for future collaboration.

Success story: TUD continuing education alumna appointed as Guatemalan Minister of Environment

CIPSEM alumna Maria Jose Iturbide was appointed as Minister of Environment and Natural Resources of Guatemala on 14 January 2024. She is now responsible for participatively formulating and executing the policies for the conservation, protection, and improvement of the environment and natural resources. She will also oversee the improvement and modernization of the management of protected areas and contribute to the development and conservation of the country's natural heritage.

Participants, supporters and guests celebrate the successful conclusion of the 88th UNEP/UNESCO/BMUV International Short Course on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to Emerging Water Challenges (SC88) together with the CIPSEM team.

Innovative solutions: Review of the 88th International Short Course on Nature-based Solutions to Water Problems

The expert participants, all working in ministries, other governmental organisations, civil society organisations or research institutions in countries of the Global South, delved into innovative approaches and practical applications of nature-based solutions during the CIPSME course and explored their transformational potential in addressing the complex and evolving water challenges of our global community.
