Conclusion of the project “Designing Inclusive Schools” (SING)

Over the past three years, the SING project, led by educational scientist Prof Dr Anke Langner, has contributed to the development of inclusion-sensitive teaching by and with teachers. SING connected the subject and vocational didactic perspective with a special needs education perspective in the training of teachers. For this purpose, empirical approaches of case-based, research-based learning and reflexive case analysis were linked with the more theory-based approach of vocational and subject didactic development of learning environments. Diagnostic and didactic learning environments were developed and made available to all participants via a learning platform. The learning outcomes and products of the students were recorded and evaluated in a process-accompanying learning assessment. In this process, both students and teachers of the respective schools were involved. They examined, developed, tested and evaluated teaching-learning settings together. Bi-professional teams of lecturers from subject didactics and special education accompanied and supervised them in the process. The results are published in a study book.
The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

News from the transnational project ArtInFuture

Living and working with Artificial Intelligence (AI) has long been a megatrend within the field of digitalisation.
There is therefore no question that digital skills and critical thinking are among the 21st century skills that need to be better integrated into curricula and education as part of a holistic approach. This is needed in order to create a new awareness among educators and to better cope with the increasing pace of change in working and social life.
The ArtIn Future project aims to tackle this task by developing, testing and then providing three innovative formats for teachers and their students in upper primary, secondary and vocational schools.
The focus is on expanding knowledge about artificial intelligence and, above all, raising awareness of ethics in this field of business and in the use of various digital tools. Especially for girls and young women.
The following 3 formats are planned for this:

1. ArtIn Future - Ethics in Artificial Intelligence -
Educational materials to debunk myths about AI, highlight differences between them, identify relevant ethical principles, and promote critical thinking;

2. ArtIn Future - Digital Skills -
A digital skills training course for educators, particularly those working with young (adult) learners and studying "weak" AI (e.g., algorithms that are able to read patterns from data sets which humans could never recognize, already today)

3. ArtIn Future - AI in the Business world -
An OER HUB presenting AI showcases from companies, products developed using AI, and success stories from (female) entrepreneurs in the field to better understand how companies are using AI and what skills are needed to accomplish these tasks.

News from the MigOst project - “Ostdeutsche Migrationsgesellschaft selbst erzählen” (East German migration society tells its own story)

In April, the citizen science project MigOst started, which aims at strengthening the public visibility of life stories of people with migration history and migrated persons in East Germany.
The project started with kick-off events in Cottbus, Dresden, and Halle to raise awareness for the project among potential cooperation partners, participants and local multipliers. Guests enjoyed stories by Douha Al Fayyad, an oud concert by Oudai Amer at the Strombad, and a reading by Karamba Diaby (Member of the Bundestag) at the WUK Theater.
Starting this fall, history workshops will be held in all three cities, co-designed by migrant organizations and individuals as part of the collaborative approach. MigOst cordially invites you to participate in the conception and implementation of the history workshops or to take part in them in the fall.
If you are curious and would like to participate, please contact Luise Böhm and Paolo Le van.
You will also receive regular information about the project via the new project newsletter.

Conclusion of the seminar Postcolonial City

‘What is postcoloniality and how is it located in the urban?’ These questions on the topic of the postcolonial city were addressed in a seminar led by Dr, Anke Schwarz of the Chair of Human Geography in the summer semester of 2021. The results of the seminar were published on 14th July 2021 in the form of a poster exhibition in cooperation with the Center for Integration Studies and the group Dresden Postkolonial. In a relaxed atmosphere, with cool drinks and interesting discussions, the exhibition was opened by the seminar participants. The posters could be seen in the windows of Afropa Weltclub (Königsbrücker Str. 13) until August 17th. Various topics such as architecture, archive documents, botany, and the effects of unresolved colonialism are discussed there. It becomes clear that patterns of colonial rule continue to exist in Dresden. These can be found in the cityscape as well as in manners and behavior.

The seminar was organized in cooperation with the Center for Integration Studies at the TU Dresden and the Dresden Postcolonial group.

News from the IDA – Initiative in Dresden Ankommen (Initiative Arriving in Dresden)

IDA - In Dresden Ankommen is a student initiative supported by TU Dresden staff. Founded in 2015, IDA started by organizing and coordinating language courses for refugees in the initial reception facilities on the TU Dresden campus.
Today, IDA pursues the mediation and coordination of voluntary offers of help from students for refugees. IDA also contributes to the inclusion of refugees and the intercultural exchange between refugees and people in Dresden (especially students).

IDA offers German language courses of all language levels to anybody who is interested. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, members of IDA, as well as volunteers from various fields, come together to share their German skills with those willing to learn. The exact procedure depends on the needs and preferences of the learners. They are given the opportunity to ask specific questions, request that a particular topic is covered, or simply engage in conversation with the teachers to practice speaking.
After having to move to an online format for a few months due to the Corona pandemic, the courses are now back to face-to-face on Tuesdays and Thursdays:
  • Tuesdays, 6:30pm – 8pm in the rooms of the “Schwarzen Schafs” on Schäferstraße 101, 01067 Friedrichstadt
  • Thursdays, 7pm – 9pm in the office of the “Willkommen in Johannstadt e. V.” on Hertelstraße 24, 01307 Johannstadt
  • Thursdays, 5:30pm – 7pm at Berzdorfer Straße 20, 01239 Prohlis-Nord

IDA is always happy to see both, new and familiar faces.

News from the project “QuaBiS” - Qualification of education professionals in Saxony

We were invited to the discussion series “Denkfabrik: Jede*r hat die Wahl?” of the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz. Together with other speakers we talked about political participation. Politics involves participation in decision-making and other areas. Often, we are not allowed to do so and others decide for us. We demand self-determination and get involved:
The work at QuaBIS is political because we speak our minds here. In the qualification we learn together and think about what should change. We communicate this knowledge to other people, e.g. to students: In our last sessions of the seminar „Schule als [ausschließende] Institution“ (School as an [exclusionary] institution) we discussed grades and education policy.
But we are also politically active outside of university. With the Netzwerk für inklusive politische Bildung (NipB) we investigated the different election manifestos: What they say and whether they are easy to understand.
In a workshop of the “Ausländerrat” (Council of Foreigners) we learned something about the topic of “flight and asylum” and developed the methods even further.

Would you also like us to get involved with you?

News from the ZfI-Network
Call for Papers: “Brauner Osten, weiße Westen. Ethnografische Studien zur Hypervisibilität des Ostens in Debatten um das Rechte“ (Brown East, White West[s]. Ethnographic Studies on the Hypervisibility of the East in Debates about the Right)

Right-wing populism, neo-nationalism, right-wing extremism and radicalism, modernized and new right-wing movements - the list of categories of analysis could be continued and yet it would remain insufficient to capture contemporary social processes: While right-wing terror continues to kill human-beings, right-wing statements are becoming increasingly accepted, right-wing politicians sit in parliaments, we encounter right-wing opinions in the media or in our own neighborhoods, and thus challenge societal reactions and ways of dealing with them. In a volume of the Berliner Blätter, in the conception of which, in addition to Urmila Goel and Salome Boßmeyer, ZfI staff member Luise Böhm is involved, space is to be given to ethnographic studies that deal with issues between right-wing attitudes and the East. Ethnographic methods in particular allow a focus on how we deal with unspoken norms of belonging on an everyday basis, and to work out their sources and effects. Ethnographic studies thus allow an important contribution to an interventional understanding of increasing right-wing opinions. Proposals for papers may be entered until October 1st, 2021.

More information about the submission here.

9/28/21 • 7:30pm-9:00pm • FRAUENSTIMMEN IN BILDERN (WOMEN'S VOICES IN PICTURES)

Biographical stories of women, traced in the form of comics, are part of a new book whose idea was developed by Dresden artists Nazanin Zandi and Elena Pagel in a three-year project. The autobiographical, honest, and humorously illustrated stories provide an insight into the stories of women of very different origins, religions and languages. Sociologist Youmna Fouad (TU Dresden) guides the conversation and contributes to it with perspectives from her research.

10/16/2021 • 10:00pm - 16:0pm • Open professional conference 'Miteinander leben in Bautzen / Budyšin'  ('Living together in Bautzen / Budyšin')

Is Bautzen-Budyšin above all a city of “Wutbürger” (angry citizens) or also on the way as a collective? “Social cohesion does not emerge on its own, nor can it be prescribed, but some framework conditions can certainly be actively designed. A requirement for it are stable and trusting relationships between different people, groups and organizations.” - according to Bertelsmann Stiftung. This is what this open conference will be about in various keynote speeches and joint workshops, to which initiatives, associations as well as citizens of the city of Bautzen-Budyšin are cordially invited.
In the morning, the focus will be on “best practice” experiences of citizen participation and negotiation processes, as well as exciting changes of perspective. In the afternoon, Bautzen theme sponsors will organize workshops on local issues of living together, one of them is history teacher and city councilor Katja Gerhardi who will give a workshop on memorial sites, city greeners and food sharers whose workshops will treat sustainable coexistence, or Caro Dittrich from the kirchliche Jugendarbeit (church youth work) on meeting places. In a separate workshop, there will be plenty of room for new, creative ideas of togetherness.
Within the framework of the project “Gesellschaft im Dialog” (Society in Dialogue) of TU Dresden, experiences are to be shared and new synergies between initiatives, associations as well as citizens of Bautzen-Budyšin are to be generated through intensive discussions with each other. „Was kann nun gemeinsam passieren?“ (What can happen together now?) is the title of the joint final discussion.
You are cordially invited.

We are looking forward to your registration.

Diversity in art and culture: How to achieve more participation - citizens have their chance to speak!
The aim of the event is to get into conversation with citizens and experts from the art and culture sector (especially from East Germany). The focus will be on questions such as: Is the diversity of (East German) society sufficiently represented in art and culture? What is the significance of diversity in art and culture for our society? What cultural policy course must be set for a more diverse and participation-oriented art and cultural landscape (especially against the backdrop of the upcoming Bundestag elections)?
The audience will be included in the discussion via various (digital) participation formats in order to make a variety of perspectives visible.

You are cordially invited to participate in the event and get involved!
