What did you actually do
in your doctoral thesis?

Dr. Max Gmelch's doctoral thesis at the Institute of Applied Physics at TU Dresden focused on data storage using light. This year, the Klaus Tschira Foundation awarded him with the KlarText Prize for outstanding science communication.

"I have always taken great pleasure in explaining science, whether among friends or on stage at science slams. However, I also think it's essential that current research and its results also be communicated to society. It's easy for anyone to try out science communication for themselves, in a small circle at the lunch table, accessible to everyone on the Internet or anything in between. And if you enjoy it, you're sure to find the right format for you."

Science Communication in Germany

Science Communication
in Germany

Should scientists become more engaged in public communication? How can this be done? Which channels are most commonly used by scientists? What goals do they pursue with them? What is holding researchers back from science communication? Which kind of support would they like to benefit from?

Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD), the German Center for Higher Education and Science Research (DZHW), and the National Institute for Science Communication (NaWik) have joined forces and asked scientists about their experiences and opinions.

The results of the current survey of 5688 scientists on science communication in Germany are now available online.

Up for science communication?

The Graduate Academy offers not only a comprehensive workshop program for researchers on the topic of science communication but also various event formats to present yourself and your research: from the Dr.-Hut-Competition at the GA-Summerfest to the GA Nerd-(Quiz)-Night, the Prof(s)ession - the talk show with the bühne of the TUD or the Science Slams with the DDocs.

Future Career Program:
Innovation

How does an innovative idea come about? Can you use entrepreneurial thinking in science? What is "design thinking," and can I use it for my research and career planning?

An interdisciplinary group of 14 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers explored these very questions - in the Future Career Program: Innovation. In this program, offered for the first time, by the Postdoc Center in cooperation with dresden|exist, early career researchers had the opportunity to develop new business ideas, test them, and pitch them on the spot.

Study: On the Psychology of founding
Joachim Herz Foundation
Why don't more researchers in Germany start their own company?

When it comes to science, Germany stands for innovation and excellence. Innovative entrepreneurs not only create economic welfare and new jobs, they also tackle societal challenges. But German researchers are not always keen on founding new businesses. What has to happen to enable more scientists to set up successful companies?

The study, funded by the Joachim Herz Foundation, focuses on the psychology of founders and the dynamics in their teams, shows best practices, gives concrete tips and encourages scientists to take action.
