Jun.-Prof. Dr. Markus Schmidtchen at the Institute of Scientific Computing
Since 1 October 2020, Markus Schmidtchen has held the junior professorship for Applied Mathematics at the Institute of Scientific Computing. After completing his Master's degree with honors at Oxford University, he was a PhD student at Imperial College London from 2015 to 2019. He then worked as a PostDoc at the Laboratoire Jacques-Louis Lions at Sorbonne Université, Paris. He has a very personal connection to Dresden, as his parents are from here and his grandparents still live here. In addition to teaching, he would particularly like to advance his research in applied mathematics at the TU Dresden: "As part of the DRESDEN-concept, the TU Dresden has an attractive location factor. On the one hand, the Faculty of Mathematics conducts very good research, and on the other hand, I find the proximity to other research institutions with a focus on developmental biology very
promising. I analyze mathematical models and investigate their properties. Specifically, these are mostly systems of non-local and non-linear equations that model interactions of different biological species. In these systems, one can observe very nice patterns, and moreover, these models are full of interesting mathematical challenges."
