ISPAD Postgraduate Teaching Meeting (Baku, Azerbaijan, February 2013)
by Kenneth J. Robertson

On 14 - 15 February 2013 ISPAD held its first postgraduate teaching meeting in conjunction with the IDF affiliated Life for a Child.

Kenneth Robertson, Przemyska Jarosz-Chobot and Scott Williamson were hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan by Gunduz Ahmadov, a local paediatric endocrinologist and diabetologist. The inspiration for the meeting came from Graham Ogle and Gunduz following a visit to Azerbaijan by Graham and discussion at the ISPAD Annual Conference.

The meeting was generously supported by the Azerbaijan Novo Nordisk affiliate and this allowed delegates from all the regions of the country to attend the two days of lectures and case discussion. As is always true in such situations, much of the discussion centred around the tension between the need to improve blood glucose control and the availability of the necessary tools. Life for a Child has been helping with monitoring equipment and supplies but this remains an obstacle for many patients. Gunduz has been working for many years to improve training for medical staff throughout the country and we hope that this very stimulating meeting will prove a turning point in galvanising his colleagues into regular collaborative meetings.

Membership Fee
New scale of membership fees worked out by Steering Committee

Following the member's decision at the ISPAD General Assembly (Istanbul, Turkey, October 12, 2012) the ISPAD Steering Committee has worked out a new scale of membership fees taking into consideration both profession and country of residence. This was not included in the past, but will now be realized with a clear differentiation of profession categories such physician, psychologist, nurse, dietitian, other healthcare professional, and student.

An increase in the membership fee will allow more activities within the mission as charity, and will ensure sustainabilty of ISPAD activities.

One very new customization will be the possibilty to save money by paying the membership fee for 3 years in advance. Also new will be the possibility to choose whether the Pediatric Diabetes Journal shall be received by postal mail, or - available soon - paperless by email only.

The new scale of membership fees will be as follows:

Profession Membership Fee
for 1 year
Membership Fee
for 3 years
Physicians $ 200,00 $ 480,00
Psychologists $ 200,00 $ 480,00
Nurses $ 130,00 $ 310,00
Dietitians $ 130,00 $ 310,00
Other Healthcare Professionals $130,00 $ 310,00
Students $ 75,00 n. a.

[Upon application to the Treasurer, consideration will be given to reducing the membership fee for members with economic difficulties.]

The new fees will officially be relevant with the new ISPAD membership year, starting July 1, 2013.

ISPAD Conference 2013: Quickfire - Question & Answer
with Gun Forsander and Ragnar Hanas, Presidents of this year's ISPAD Annual Scientific Conference

How did you both feel when you were asked to be conference presidents and when did this happen?
We had been thinking for a while on the possibility of arranging an ISPAD meeting in Gothenburg when we 2010 were asked to be presidents. We felt happy and excited when the question came up and that feeling of joy has been there since the decision was made. It is a great honour and privilege to arrange the most important meeting on pediatric diabetes and we are looking forward to seeing many good friends and colleagues from all parts of the world in October 2013.

What do you think people can expect from this year´s ISPAD conference?
We hope people will find the programme interesting and appealing to all diabetes team members, regardless of how many years one has been into this field professionally and/or scientifically. Personally, we know that you will all be spoilt for choice with the rich scientific programme we have put together for you!

In your opinion, why will this year’s ISPAD conference be the best ever?
There have been so many fantastic ISPAD meetings in the past so we have to be humble and just anticipate that our ISPAD meeting will be regarded as the next success in the line of other prosperous meetings. We would like to stress the importance of a healthy lifestyle during the conference and as Gothenburg is a compact city, you will find that most locations are within a healthy walking distance for you.

Aside from coming to the conference of course, what would you recommend ISPAD delegates to do in Gothenburg?
Gothenburg is a friendly city, easy to get to know by walking around, visiting the coffeeshops and restaurants and with excellent shopping facilities. The traffic is not heavy in comparison to most cities and it is easy to get into the archipelago with just a tram-ticket. There is a nice Museum of Art and a lovely Concert Hall. The Opera House which is situated just at the river side is well known for the performances and there are nice jazz clubs and pubs near by. Everything in Gothenburg is easy to reach by foot or a short drive by cab, bus or tram. The weather in October is a bit unpredictable, but hopefully we will have wonderful days with blue sky, yellow-red leaves on the trees and crispy air. There will be no snow but bring a warm sweater!

In just one sentence: Why are you an ISPAD Member and why would you recommend ISPAD delegates to join the society?
ISPAD is the most important society for people like us - devoted to the care of children and adolescents with diabetes!
