ISPAD President Report
Pediatric Diabetes Symposium in Cairo

As President of ISPAD, I was honored and privileged for our Society to be invited to participate in a one-day Postgraduate Seminar in Paediatric Diabetes organised by the Egyptian Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (ESPED), in April 2013, in Cairo.

The meeting was conceived and delivered locally by Mona Salem (Organiser of the Seminar, Professor of Pediatrics, Ain Shams University, Cairo and Vice President of ESPED) and Professor Isis Ghaly (Diabetes and Endocrine Unit, Kasr AlAiny, Cairo University and current ESPED President) and the meeting coordinated by Professor Mona M. Hassan, Kasr AlAiny School Medicine, Cairo University). The ISPAD Faculty was Klemens Raile (Consultant Pediatrician, Head of Molecular Diabetes Research Group, Berlin, Germany), Dr Alexandra Greene (Senior Research Fellow, Child Health, School of Medicine, University of Dundee), Gun Forsander (Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Diabetes, Children's Hospital, Sahlgrenska/Ostra University Hospital, Göteborg, Sweden) and Stephen Greene (Professor of Child and Adolescent Health and current President of the International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes, University of Dundee, Scotland, UK).

The Seminar covered several topics relating to issues of concern for managing children with diabetes in Egypt and the Middle East: Service Provision and Guidance for Care; Hypoglycemia; Pumps and Sensors; Genetics of Diabetes; Patient Communication and Health Education. Throughout the Symposium the topics were illustrated by a series of case presentations given by local paediatric Diabetologists: Ashraf Al-Sharkawy (Assist. Prof. of Pediatrics, Mansura University); Nancy El-Barbary (Assist. Prof. of Pediatrics, Ain-Shams University); Noha Musa (Lecturer of Pediatrics, Diabetes Endocrine and Metabolism Pediatric Unit, Cairo University). The issues produced a vigorous and healthy debate from the audience and several matters were discussed in detail.

Indeed, it was this passion and interest shown by all concerned that left a lasting mark and gave hope and optimism that children and young people with diabetes are being served hugely well by all of the doctors and medical professionals in the country. This is despite the major political and social issues that are currently disrupting the Egyptian Society. Relatively speaking, during the symposium the civil unrest was limited and there was a hope that Health Services would develop under a new political regime. Since the Symposium, sadly the concerns and unrest have returned and major conflict has resumed but undoubtedly the representatives that we met in Cairo are continuing to work as hard to manage and support families with diabetes.

Professor Mona Salem and her dedicated colleagues are to be congratulated on the tremendous efforts and sacrifices they are making on behalf of diabetes in the young. Her work in the most difficult of situations over the years and the admiration and enthusiasm that she has instilled in her colleagues and trainees has been recognised by the award of the ISPAD 2013 Lestradet Prize. I will be an honor for me to present this personally on behalf of ISPAD to Mona in Gothenburg.

It is hoped that a solution to the political situation in Egypt and other Middle East countries materialises soon and that ISPAD can continue to support organisations such as ESPED in the Middle East. The Egyptian medical professionals are to be admired and applauded in their struggles and are setting a benchmark across the Arab world.

14th Annual ISPAD Research School for Physicians

A very successful Science School was organised by Maria Craig and her team in Australia. Twenty fellows from different countries participated in the interactive program. For more details click here.

It will be a difficult act to follow but the planning for 15th Research School is already ongoing . Please note the dates!

We invite pediatric endocrinology/diabetes fellows and early pediatric endocrinology/diabetes faculty from around the globe to attend the 14th Annual ISPAD Research School for Physicians, sponsored by Sanofi Aventis.

The Research School will take place in Boston, Massachusetts, April 7-11, 2014. Lori Laffel MD MPH will convene the meeting, which will take place at the Joslin Diabetes Center.

Being an ISPAD member is a core requirement; members who have previously attended an ISPAD Science School for Physicians are not eligible to apply.

The program is aimed at fellows or junior faculty in pediatric diabetes whose training and/or career development includes research. The course will enable attendees to enhance their knowledge in the principles of research methodology, including basic/laboratory and clinical/translational approaches used in diabetes-related research. The 4½ day program will consist of lectures on study design, statistical analysis and presentation of research findings; as well plenary lectures by experts in key areas of basic/clinical diabetes research.

Applications will be due November 15, 2013; applicants will be notified by January 17, 2014.
