Presidents Note by Stephen Greene In recent weeks I have attended, on behalf of ISPAD, meetings, symposia and workshops on diabetes in the young that have discussed topics ranging from cutting edge science, clinical strategies for improving clinical outcome, behavioural support approaches and delivering care in first world through to developing world countries. This breadth of activity reflects the responsibility of ISPAD and places a considerable obligation on our organisation to echo the views of the disparate fraternity of our membership.
We hope that our “three pillars” of Science, Education and Advocacy allows us to deliver for children, adolescents and their families and we are committed to keeping this broad approach. This could place the organisation in a difficult position. We could be accused, and indeed have been often even by some of our members in the past, in lacking focus. If we spread our remit too wide we may fail to produce effective change or influence. However, we are the only organisation that has this broad remit and we must rise to the challenge. A key element is to promote the activities of ISPAD at all opportunities and to dispense excellence in all that we are involved in. I believe that we have a committed membership that strives to deliver for ISPAD. As we grow as a society we have to support the membership to take on the various activities with, not only financial support, but also educational resources and guidelines that promotes best practice. The new website is leading the way for us and will take us on a new journey as we explore e-Learning, social media and “blogs” as well as a much more efficient society. Please engage with the website, use it and comment. We need your input to continue the changes necessary for any organisation to continue to improve. We have initiated an “ISPAD Guidelines Review Committee” and an updated set of guidelines will be presented in the next 18 to 24 months. I was heartened at a recent large Pharmaceutical Symposium on Type 1 diabetes to find in an audience survey that the ISPAD Guidelines are used predominantly across the Paediatric world. This underlies the importance of the Society and the information we produce and the directions we set. I have asked for comments on the web site for the “ISPAD Declaration of Kwa Zulu”. I plan to use this as the basis of what ISPAD currently stands for in producing the outcomes necessary to deliver best practice care. Please let me know of your comments on the Declaration. I will use the individual statements to discuss various issues and areas of concern in the coming ISPAD Newsletters leading up to announcing a final statement at the Gothenburg ISPAD Meeting. The annual conference is progressing well thanks to the Local Organising Committee, under the direction of Ragnar Hanas and Gun Forsander. The scientific programme has excellence stamped all over it and Swedish hospitality will be second to none. Please start arranging your plans for the meeting now: abstract submission; early registration; travel grant applications; sponsorship. We are very much looking forward to meeting old and new friends and developing the Society for the future. |
